Baby’s First Foods: Introducing Solids

Mealtime in our family has always been a fun and delicious time. We sit together at the table eating delicious homemade food. So Harlee starting solids is a very exciting time and I can’t wait to share Baby’s First Foods!

Before starting solids there are a few milestones a baby has to reach! Most babies start eating solids between 4 and 6 months but ultimately it’s when your baby is ready!

Signs Baby Is Ready To Start Solids

  • Baby shows interest in food
  • Baby can hold its head up and sit unsupported
  • No more tongue thrust

We were waiting until Harlee was 6 months old before starting solids, but ultimately started at 5.5 months because she reached the milestones mentioned above!

How To Introduce Solids

There is no right or wrong way to feed your baby — it’s how you choose to do it. For us, we chose a time of day when both Ryan and I could be present for it so we could make it a family affair while also allowing enough time during Harlee’s wake window so she wouldn’t be fussy.

  1. Feed baby milk first. It’s not until they’re 1 year old that food becomes the main source of nutrition for baby. We do milk-food-milk (before a nap).
